We are thrilled to share that SHARE has launched a new gardening initiative thanks to the generous support of the Summer Hill Community Garden/Eora Garden. We have been kindly allocated garden beds within this vibrant and culturally significant community space, which will now become an extension of our learning environment. This initiative offers children a unique opportunity to connect with nature, develop hands-on gardening skills, and deepen their understanding of sustainability and Indigenous culture.
We began our journey in April during Vacation Care, where the children enthusiastically rolled up their sleeves and spent an afternoon weeding and preparing the garden beds. It was a wonderful way to introduce them to the joys and responsibilities of caring for a garden. The experience sparked curiosity and excitement among the children, and it was heartwarming to see how quickly they took pride in their contribution to the space.
As we move forward, we plan to grow a variety of Indigenous plants that are native to the local area. This not only supports local biodiversity but also provides an opportunity for the children to learn about the cultural significance and traditional uses of these plants by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through this initiative, we aim to foster a deeper respect for the land and promote environmental stewardship in a meaningful and engaging way.
The garden will be an ongoing project, integrated into our regular programming throughout the year. We look forward to watching both the garden and the children grow as they nurture the space, observe seasonal changes, and enjoy the many lessons that come from working with the earth.
